You Talkin' to Me? Would a Butler NCAA title be bigger than 'Nova's?

Twenty-five years ago Thursday, eighth-seeded Villanova pulled off maybe the biggest upset in NCAA Championship history. Would Butler, even though it's a No. 5 seed, top it by winning this year? And is there anyone outside of the three other Final Four schools who won't be pulling for Butler? I know I'd rather have needles jammed into my eyes or listen to sports-talk radio than see Bobby Huggins win anything.

Don't know if Butler would top Villanova necessarily, but it would be awfully close. How can you not love them? Little school, plays as a team, no real flash, their campus is down the street from the stadium. They're the modern-day Hoosiers. And they would be the perfect team to win it this year, of all years. All of the big dogs are out, and the teams remaining are just that: Teams. And since I was accused of holding back information the other day about my dislike for Duke, I'll fully disclose this: I went to Indiana. Since my Hoosiers aren't in it, I'm going with the other team from the state.

Indiana? What was Branch McCracken really like, Ash?

Butler tops Villanova. The Horizon League champion winning the national title in this day and age beats all. However, there's no Patrick Ewing as the mountain to be climbed. Remember that it wasn't just 'Nova in that game. The defending national champion was there as the chalk.

And Ashley, you're still not fully disclosing your well-earned anti-Dukeness. Care to come clean?

I have nothing to hide. My father was an assistant at Duke, and then the head coach for one season in the early 1970s. Then they hired Bill Foster, then Mike Krzyzewski. He was young at the time, but he deserved more of a shot than they gave him. As I tried to explain to one e-mailer earlier this week, my anti-Dukeness has more to do with the fact that they've won so much under Krzyzewski than with the way my father was treated. And I have equal dislike for Carolina, for the same reason. Maybe more so, because my brother went there, and he dishes the smack pretty well. The Hoosiers haven't exactly given me much to work with. Tom Crean will change that.

You've never hidden your roots. It's just good for people to know you come by your biases honestly. It's amazing that so many people have been able to separate their feelings about Bob Knight from their feelings about IU. I don't remember the Indiana hatred being as strong years ago when Knight was on top. Duke, on the other hand, offers the perfect storm for haters.

Now that Bob Knight hate is a whole other topic.

And, alas, one for another day, or Knight.
