Redskins swap QB Campbell to Raiders

  • Jason Campbell "fits for what we're doing," coach Tom Cable said after Oakland traded a 2012 pick for him.

NFL teams were almost as busy dealing veterans as they were making picks Saturday.

Jason Campbell, LenDale White, Leon Washington, Kirk Morrison, and Bryant McFadden all changed teams on the final day of the draft. And Alan Faneca was cut.

With ex-Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb now in Washington, Campbell became expendable and was sent to Oakland for a fourth-round pick in 2012.

"Working with Jason, we were trying to find him a proper home where he had a chance to compete for the starting job," Redskins general manager Bruce Allen said.

Oakland's other quarterbacks are JaMarcus Russell (the No. 1 overall pick in 2007), Bruce Gradkowski, Charlie Frye, and Kyle Boller.

"I feel like I am going to be the starter, from talking to them in detail," Campbell said of the Raiders.

The Tennessee Titans dealt White to Seattle, reuniting the running back with his college coach, Pete Carroll. Later, the Seahawks added another runner, Washington, from the Jets.

"Just a great one-two punch to add to our team," Carroll said of the new runners. "We're real excited about Leon Washington. Our guys loved him."

Washington missed half of 2009 with a severe leg injury. He recently re-signed with the Jets, for whom he has starred as a kick returner, runner, and receiver.

The burly and bruising White helped Carroll win a national championship at Southern Cal. But he lost his starting job to Chris Johnson and had problems being on time for meetings.

Oakland sent middle linebacker Morrison to Jacksonville in Round 4 - the Raiders had drafted Rolando McClain on Thursday - and Pittsburgh's fifth-round deal brought back McFadden, a cornerback who won a Super Bowl with the Steelers in 2008.

The Jets, meanwhile, cut Faneca even though the nine-time Pro Bowl guard is owed $5.2 million in guaranteed salary this year. "Alan's definitely going to play in this league again," coach Rex Ryan said.

Also, the New England Patriots signed defensive tackle Gerard Warren, a perennial underachiever who was the third overall pick in 2001.

Westbrook visit. Running back Brian Westbrook, released by the Eagles in February after an injury-plagued 2009 season, had a physical with the St. Louis Rams on Saturday. Coach Steve Spagnuolo was noncommittal about the visit, saying it was "way, way early."
