Honoring history

The Boston Bruins are unveiling a statue of Bobby Orr in his defining moment.

The bronze sculpture depicts the most beloved player in team history flying through the air with his arms outstretched after scoring the goal that clinched the 1970 Stanley Cup championship against the St. Louis Blues. It's scheduled to be unveiled Monday outside the TD Garden.

The ceremony comes on the 40th anniversary of the goal.

Jumbo Joe

When the San Jose Sharks won their first-round playoff series it was in spite of the lackluster performance from Joe Thornton.

"No Show Joe" turned back into "Jumbo Joe" in the second round, leading the Sharks past the two-time defending Western Conference champion Detroit Red Wings in five games.

Story continues below.

"I kind of got off to a slow start against Colorado and never really found my game that series," Thornton said in the victorious locker room Saturday night. "For whatever reason, I always play Detroit really well. They have a competitive bunch up front. It forces me to be on top of my game."

World championships

Jaromir Jagr set up three goals to help the Czech Republic cruise past France, 6-2, in their opening game of the ice hockey world championships in Cologne, Germany.

Group C rival Sweden won a had-fought battle with Norway, 5-2.

In Group A, Belarus rallied from two goals down to beat Kazakstan, 5-2. Russia, led by its big guns - team captain Ilya Kovalchuk, Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, and Maxim Afinogenov - beat Slovakia, 3-1.
