No shot, New York

Major League Baseball denied a protest filed by the New York Yankees this week after a loss to the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees claimed there was no evidence of an injury when Boston starter Josh Beckett was pulled in the fifth inning Tuesday night. Reliever Manny Delcarmen was given all the time he needed to get ready, rather than the standard eight warmup pitches.

New York wound up losing, and Boston put Beckett on the disabled list the next day.

Story continues below.

The protest was turned down Thursday by MLB president Bob DuPuy.

How much does Rivera have left?

That grand slam Mariano Rivera gave up on Sunday night to the Twins' Jason Kubel has people wondering about the 40-year-old Yankee closer's arm.

ESPN's Jayson Stark talked to a top major-league scout this week and got a somber assessment.

"I know this is heresy," the scout said, "but I think he's slipping because his velocity is not there. He's only about 89-90-91 m.p.h., especially after about 10 pitches. He's not 93-94 anymore, and it's made a big difference."

Who's next? Nine Inch Nails?

General manager Theo Epstein got some heat from disgruntled Boston fans for attending a Pearl Jam concert on Monday night - the same night the Red Sox suffered a bitter, 11-9, loss in New York when the Yankees scored four run in the bottom of the ninth.

Which prompted Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe to relate this story:

"Granted, it probably wasn't the best timing, given that the Sox suffered the worst loss of what has been a very frustrating season," Cafardo wrote. "But this isn't like the days when former Twins GM Howard Fox would walk into manager Ray Miller's office and ask, 'How'd we do last night?'

"Criticize Epstein, if you must, for his team construction, his moves [or lack thereof], but please - spending two hours at a Pearl Jam concert makes you angry?"

Bitter anniversary

Boston designated Scott Schoeneweis for assignment on a very bad day. The lefthander got the news on Wednesday night as he was bracing for the first anniversary of his wife's death. Gabrielle Schoeneweis died last May 20 from an overdose of cocaine and the anesthetic lidocaine.

Schoeneweis, a graduate of Lenape High in Burlington County, was 1-0 with a 7.90 ERA in 15 appearances.

Noteworthy

Outfielder Michael Harrington, who plays for single A Fort Myers in the Minnesota Twins system, was suspended 50 games for violating the minor league drug program. . . . New York put catcher Jorge Posada on the 15-day disabled list with a broken bone in his right foot and promoted Chad Moeller from triple A. . . . Oakland recalled righthander Vin Mazzaro from triple-A.
