  • Flyers head for their dressing room for the final time.

The ink has barely dried on the Flyers' magical, storybook season - one that ended on Wednesday night without a seventh chapter in the Stanley Cup finals, without a parade down Broad Street - but the players will begin cleaning out their lockers today at the Skate Zone.

Next season is less than 4 months away.

With the salary cap expected to rise approximately $2 million, pushing it to a postlockout high of $58.8 million, the Flyers will have to make at least a few interesting decisions. Before restricted free agents are signed, the Flyers have approximately $8.82 million worth of wiggle room.

Story continues below.

Here is a player-by-player breakdown:

FORWARDS

DANNY BRIERE

Age: 32

Contract: 5 years left

Cap hit: $6.5 million

Chatter: With 30 points in 23 playoff games, Briere made a legitimate case for the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Flyers skated off with the Cup. For the first time since he arrived, Briere earned his lofty paycheck in the eyes of the fans.

MIKE RICHARDS

Age: 25

Contract: 10 years left

Cap hit: $5.75 million

Chatter: Despite a slanderous rumor that Richards struggled with newcomer Chris Pronger in the locker room, Richards proved his leadership qualities throughout the playoffs - on and off the ice.

SIMON GAGNE

Age: 30

Contract: 1 year left

Cap hit: $5.25 million

Chatter: Gagne battled back through a nasty toe injury in the first round, returning to the lineup a full 2 weeks before he was completely healthy to score the Flyers' game-winner in overtime in Game 4 against the Bruins. He has a no-trade clause.

JEFF CARTER

Age: 25

Contract: 1 year left

Cap hit: $5 million

Chatter: After returning from two different foot fractures, Carter struggled in the Stanley Cup finals, posting just an empty-net goal and one assist in six games against the Blackhawks. He undoubtedly will be subject to rampant rumors this offseason if the Flyers want a top goalie.

SCOTT HARTNELL

Age: 28

Contract: 3 years left

Cap hit: $4.2 million

Chatter: Hartnell transformed from regular-season scapegoat to postseason hero with 17 points in 23 playoff games, silencing the critics begging for him to be dealt in the summer. He has a no-trade clause.

JAMES van RIEMSDYK

Age: 21

Contract: 2 years left

Cap hit: $1.65 million

Chatter: Van Riemsdyk, who was a healthy scratch for two games in the finals, performed much better under pressure. With a modest 35 points in the regular season, the rookie's numbers weren't impressive but a big step from the NCAA.

IAN LAPERRIERE

Age: 36

Contract: 2 years left

Cap hit: $1.16 million
