Eagles sign Kafka, Harbor

With so much roster transition, this Eagles training camp is going to be even more crucial than usual. Birds coach Andy Reid told reporters last week when OTAs ended that he'd told players to be prepared for a tough camp, one in which the team will be cloistered at Lehigh about a week longer than usual before returning to NovaCare.

One reflection of how management views the importance of this camp is that yesterday's signings of quarterback Mike Kafka and tight end Clay Harbor give the team nine signed draft picks out of its large draft class of 13, the most drafted rookies the Eagles have had during the era of the seven-round draft.

Kafka, from Northwestern, and Harbor, from Missouri State, acquitted themselves well during the OTAs. Both were fourth-round selections and agreed to 4-year deals.

Kafka finished his career with 4,265 passing yards (eighth in school history), 887 rushing yards (third-highest by a QB in school history) and 30 touchdowns (19 passing, 11 rushing).

In 44 games, Harbor caught a school-record 150 passes for 1,906 yards and 10 touchdowns. An Associated Press first-team All-American, he set career highs in catches (59) and yards (729) in 2009.

Rookies report to Lehigh on July 26; veterans on July 29.

Elsewhere, former Eagles running back Ryan Moats signed with the Minnesota Vikings, where he will be reunited with Brad Childress, who was the Birds' offensive coordinator when Moats was drafted in the third round in 2005. Moats was recently released by the Houston Texans.
