The other central Pennsylvania chocolates

Born in Derry Church, Pa., just 100 yards away from the ancestral home of Milton Hershey, self-taught chef Eric Cayton believes he was destined for a life in chocolate. Rustic is his appropriate description of the bonbons he's crafting now at his Derry Church Artisan Chocolates in Mechanicsburg.

Rustic

is his appropriate description of the bonbons he's crafting now at his Derry Church Artisan Chocolates in Mechanicsburg. His most distinctive creations, though, are homey mini-pies ("New York" cheesecake, "Savannah" peach crisp) that come, crumbly crusts and all, inside bite-size dark chocolate cups. Next up, a series inspired by Central Pennsylvania's small family farms, from buckwheat honeypots to Amish country shoofly pie.

A cider with a view

Perched in a spectacular tasting room atop a hill in apple country just north of Gettysburg, Hauser Estates is one of Pennsylvania's newest, most ambitious wineries. The vino, frankly, still has a long way to go. But Hauser's hard apple cider is fantastic - especially the off-dry, aromatic Rome blend. Sold under the Jack's brand, it's no wonder that it's good: the late John "Jack" Hauser was once president of Biglerville's applesauce powerhouse, Musselman's.

Jack's hard cider, available in several different blends, costs $12.99 for a six-pack or $42 a case at Hauser Estates, 410 Cashtown Rd., Biglerville, 717-334-4888; www.hauserestate.com.
