Posted: June 17, 2010

Sunoco Inc. has agreed to pay $81,000 in penalties for failing to notify federal and state environmental agencies immediately after benzene was accidentally released into the air from its Philadelphia oil refinery in January 2007. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said the company released 1,608 pounds of benzene, but did not immediately notify officials as required. As part of the settlement, Sunoco neither admitted nor denied liability for the alleged violations. - Sandy Bauers
