Dan Gross: It's always sunny at McElhenney's tavern

June 21, 2010|By Dan Gross

DRINKERS AT at Mac's Tavern (226 Market) got to meet "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" creator and star Rob McElhenney and his very pregnant wife/co-star Kaitlin Olson  on Saturday. The pair are partners in Mac's with a few of South Philly-raised McElhenney's St. Joe's Prep pals and will be there Wednesday for an invite-only grand opening party. The couple and castmates Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, also expected at the opening, are shooting their FX series around town today and tomorrow, including a scene with Phillies Chase Utley and Ryan Howard. McElhenney's character, Mac, has a stalkery man-crush on Utley and sent him a love letter in an episode last year about how they should be friends.

Out and about

Charles Barkley and a few friends dined Friday at Totaro's (729 E. Hector) in Conshohocken. Barkley left a generous tip and took pictures with anybody who asked. They don't call him Sir Charles for nothing. Ardmore native "Office" actress Kate Flannery hung out with Butch Patrick aka Eddie Munster and comedian Doug Benson at her family's bar T.A. Flannery's (11 S. 21st) the other night while in town to perform at Helium (2031 Sansom). Benson also performed at the club over the weekend, and Patrick, we're told, was just here hanging out with friends. Flannery, who plays Meredith on the hit series, was also seen in a Phillies cap having breakfast at the Reading Terminal Market's Down Home Diner.

* Locally raised comic/actor Kevin Hart, whose credits include "Death at a Funeral," and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," and family hung out at the Funplex in Mt. Laurel Tuesday night and was happy to take pictures with and sign autographs for fans. Hart, who used to sell sneakers at City Sports (1608 Walnut) plays July 9 at the Borgata.

Author lets them eat cake

Since cake from the Swiss Pastry Shop (35 S. 19th) factors into her new novel, "29," author Adena Halpern will serve it up at 7 p.m. Thursday during her book signing at Barnes & Noble on Rittenhouse Square.

The Bala Cynwyd native and Harriton High grad worked many area businesses and locations into her book about a 75-year-old grandmother whose birthday wish, made at the Prime Rib (17th & Locust), is to be 29 for a day and experience that age as part of her granddaughter's generation.
