Tattle: Colbert to U.S. unemployed: Take those farm jobs

June 25, 2010|By Howard Gensler
  • Stephen Colbert, in 2008 photo in his New York studio, has an idea for immigration reform.

STEPHEN COLBERT is taking a stand on immigration reform and to help him, he's picked the people who pick our fruits and vegetables.

The farm workers are teaming up with Colbert to challenge unemployed Americans: Come on, take our jobs.

(Note: This is the farm workers, not working journalists!)

According to the Labor Department, more than half the nation's farm workers are illegal immigrants and Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farm Workers, says his members are tired of being blamed for taking American jobs.

That's why the group, with Colbert's help, is challenging unemployed Americans to apply for the thousands of agricultural jobs posted with state agencies. You want to break your back picking berries in the hot sun, fill out an online form and you'll be trained and put to work.

Elin looks like some catch

RadarOnline.com says the Tiger Woods-Elin Nordegren divorce is about to become official.

"They've agreed on all the major points," an unidentified source told Radar Online. "It's all been worked out privately.

"Both Tiger and Elin are very close to finishing the negotiations and filing and signing the paperwork."

We're going to take this number with a grain of salt, if not the entire shaker, but Radar says Elin is expected to receive about $750 million in the settlement.

A former Swedish model with $750 million in the bank?

Already her match.com mailbox is full.

Tattbits

* Portland, Ore., police say they investigated allegations that former Vice President Al Gore had "unwanted sexual contact" with a massage therapist during an October 2006 visit, but they found insufficient evidence to support the woman's claims.

Perhaps it was a misunderstanding over Gore asking the woman to hug his tree.

* Dr. Dre and Timbaland went back to school Wednesday night.

The pair shocked students when they appeared at a Culver City High School graduation party. Timbaland performed the tunes "The Way I Are" (bet the grammar teachers didn't like that one), "Promiscuous Girl" (bet the guidance counselors didn't like that one), "Carry Out" and "Say Something" on a stage inside the school's gym.

The surprise performance wasn't just a good deed; it was sponsored by Hewlett-Packard and Interscope Records, which have partnered with the aim of improving digital sound quality.

The promotional event was also recorded for an online documentary and featured free food, photos and a raffle. HP said it was donating $10,000 worth of computer equipment to the school.
