Man killed in Chester despite state of emergency

Posted: June 28, 2010

A man shot several times died late last night in Chester, which has been under a state of emergency because of a rash of homicides earlier this month.

The man, whose name was not released, was found just before 11 p.m. in a rented white Dodge Caravan at Honan and Boyle Streets, according to police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:04 p.m.

Investigators took statements from several witnesses, but no arrests were reported by police overnight.

Mayor Wendell Butler declared a state of emergency after four people, including a 2-year-old boy, were killed in less than a week. Curfews from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. were imposed in five high-crime areas, and police have been working extended shifts.

Chester's new PPL Park was the site of Sunday's home opener for Major League Soccer's Philadelphia Union. The Union defeated the Seattle Sounders FC, 3-1 before a sellout crowd.

At the stadium Sunday night, the only incidents involved such minor crimes as ticket scalping, said Captain Stephen Fox.

Police do not believe last night's murder was connected to any of the other recent ones, Fox said.

"We are still in a preliminary stage of the investigation," he said.
