Phillies Notes: Phillies' Polanco still hampered by injury

June 29, 2010|By Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer

CINCINNATI - Placido Polanco is hopeful he can play Tuesday after receiving his second cortisone shot Sunday for his sore left elbow in less than a month. But after the latest aggravation of his injury, the Phillies third baseman is resigned to the fact that this is something that could bother him all season.

It also could require off-season surgery.

"We're really going to have to take a closer look at it," Polanco said Monday.

The elbow problems began April 21 against Atlanta when Polanco was hit by a Tim Hudson pitch. But the pain might stem from a bone spur that has been in Polanco's elbow for a while.

Being hit by the pitch caused the spur to act up. It has affected Polanco's swing.

"Oh, yeah," he said.

Polanco has aggravated the injury twice since then, both times diving for balls at third.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he wants to avoid this being a season-long occurrence, which might require rest. But Polanco was reluctant to say he needed regularly scheduled days off.

"We rely on him a lot," Manuel said, "and there's going to be a lot of tough plays and third base, and he's going to be sliding and things like that. If we can, I'd like to get him well."

Other injuries

Lefthander J.A. Happ (strained left elbow) will make his fifth rehab start Tuesday for triple-A Lehigh Valley. "He's making progress," said Scott Proefrock, the Phillies' assistant general manager. "But I can't tell you this will be his last rehab start."

Ryan Madson (broken right toe) will make his second rehab appearance Tuesday for single-A Clearwater.

Lefthander Antonio Bastardo (elbow inflammation) began a throwing program Monday. He is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, but he will not be ready. Righthander Chad Durbin (strained right hamstring) is continuing his rehab in Clearwater, Fla.

Extra bases

The Phillies gave Reds infielder Miguel Cairo his National League championship ring and pendant before Monday's game. Cairo appeared in four playoff games in 2009. . . . The Phillies' rained-out May 12 game against the Colorado Rockies has been rescheduled for Sept. 2 (7:10 p.m.) at Coors Field in Denver.
