Flyers’ Gagne waives no-trade clause

Left winger Simon Gagne's days as a member of the Flyers could be numbered.

Gagne, 30, the longest-tenured current Flyer, has waived his no-trade clause, an NHL source confirmed Friday night.

The Flyers and Los Angeles have been talking about a deal, but the Kings have said they want to keep Jonathan Bernier and Jonathan Quick, two goalies that interest the Flyers.

If the Flyers sweetened the deal, the might convince the Kings to trade one of the goaltenders.

A first-round pick in 1998, Gagne has played all 10 of his NHL seasons with the Flyers. His 524 career points place him 10th on the club's all-time list; he passed Gary Dornhoefer last season.

Trading Gagne, who will have a $5.25 million cap hit this season, could enable the Flyers to fit restricted free agents Dan Carcillo and Darroll Powe under the cap. The Flyers currently have just $577,738 of cap space.

Gagne, one of the most respected and well-liked players in the Flyers' locker room, can be an unrestricted free agent in 2011-12.

Gagne scored 17 goals last season, one in which he played just 57 games because of abdominal surgery. He suffered a broken foot in the first round of the playoffs but made a heroic return by scoring four goals in four games in the Eastern Conference semifinals against Boston, including the winner in a 4-3 victory in Game 7. That win capped the Flyers' comeback from a 3-0 series deficit.

In the conference finals, Gagne added three goals as the Flyers ousted Montreal in five games.

Gagne tried to play through severe pain in the Stanley Cup Finals against Chicago. He was injected with pain killers, but he wasn't himself and had two goals and was minus-8 in the Finals.

Before the Flyers signed Michael Leighton, they had considered moving Gagne for a goalie if he waived his no-trade clause, a source said.

Leighton could still be the Flyers' No. 1 goalie, and the Flyers might deal Gagne for a draft pick and get some cap relief.
