Clout: A Florida gun-permit-loophole case lends Onorato an example in his campaign against Corbett

July 02, 2010

DAN ONORATO and Tom Corbett are still fighting about Florida - specifically the loophole that allows Pennsylvania residents to apply to the Sunshine State for permits to carry concealed weapons.

Onorato, the Democratic nominee for governor, calls the Florida loophole an "out-of- control situation" that Corbett could fix in his current job as state attorney general.

Corbett, the Republican nominee, won't touch the issue. His campaign dismisses the loophole as a "solution in search of a problem," claiming critics can't point to a "single incident of serious crime" with a Florida permit.

Story continues below.

Meet Sanford King.

King was issued permits to carry a concealed weapon by Pennsylvania and Florida in 2006. He was arrested in 2008 for stealing a cell phone and pulling a handgun on the victim as he tried to sell the phone back to her.

Philadelphia yanked King's gun permit right away. Florida is still giving it deep thought.

That's curious because King was convicted last year of robbery with the threat of serious injury [the gun], possession of an instrument of crime [again, the gun] and recklessly endangering another person [ladies and gents, let's hear it for the gun].

King is now serving three to six years in state prison. His Florida gun permit, which does not expire until Oct. 31, 2011, is still active, though we certainly hope he doesn't have much use for it.

Lt. Lisa King, who runs the Philadelphia Police Department's Gun Permit Unit, said she has repeatedly asked Florida officials to revoke King's permit. State officials in Florida apparently lost all the paperwork she sent them on the case so she had to send a fresh batch this week.

A spokesman for the Florida Department of Agriculture said he could not answer our questions about King's permit or Philadelphia's efforts to have it revoked because those files are all confidential.

Corbett's campaign is sticking to its guns on the issue, saying his record with the Philadelphia Gun Violence Task Force shows he is serious about guns and crime.

Corbett spokesman Kevin Harley said King's permit was just one example out of thousands of Florida permits issued here.

"While Dan Onorato is scheming ways to harass law-abiding citizens, Tom Corbett is busy taking the guns away from violent criminals," Harley said. "That's the difference between a prosecutor and a politician."

Cruz and Ramos fight on

The disputed election for the 180th District state House seat has at least five more weeks of fighting.
