Manslaughter charge for woman who sat on baby

PITTSBURGH - A Pennsylvania woman has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the suffocation of her 1-month-old granddaughter after, police say, she sat on the baby. Elane Springs, 49, did not immediately notice she had sat on the baby, who was sleeping on a couch Sept. 18, 2008, Pittsburgh police said. Instead of calling 911 when she got up, police said, Springs changed the baby's clothes and then called her son about an hour later. Police say she left a message asking her son to tell his sister, the baby's mother, that the baby had died. Springs was being held at the Allegheny County Jail. - AP
