A 39-year-old man who was shot in the face while helping someone push a broken-down car in Kensington was apparently an innocent victim caught in a burst of gunfire, police said.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, a few men ran onto Madison Street near Kensington Avenue and started shooting at a tan or beige Buick, investigators said.

They missed the Buick and instead struck the victim who was in front of the Buick helping push another car. The Buick sped away.

Police did not identify the victim, whom neighbors called "Old Man Jim," and said he hasn't been fully interviewed because of his injuries. They said he may have been pushing a shopping cart up the street when he stopped to help push the car.

He was in critical but stable condition yesterday at Hahnemann University Hospital.Neighbors on Madison Street said the victim lived on the block but kept to himself.

"He was always collecting cans," said DeAndre Jackson.
