'Beer Summit' on race relations being held

Posted: July 16, 2010

To promote a lively discussion of race relations in Philadelphia and America, a nonprofit group will play host to its second annual "Beer Summit" from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mace's Crossing, 1714 Cherry St.

Global Citizen, a nonprofit group dedicated to civic engagement and community volunteering, will present the event, named for a much smaller gathering last summer at the White House.

Last year, a police officer in Cambridge, Mass., arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., a Harvard University professor, in Gates' home after investigating a suspected burglary.

President Obama later invited Gates, who is African American, and the white police officer to Washington, where he held what was dubbed a "beer summit." - Vernon Clark
