Dan Gross: Size matters for local 'Hung' actor

July 20, 2010|By Dan Gross

BRISTOL NATIVE actor Charlie Saxton has a big

plot line coming up on HBO's "Hung" Sunday and the following week, but he doesn't want to give away details.

"It's the best acting I've had a chance to do on the show," says the 20-year-old, who plays the teenage son of a well-endowed male prostitute and teacher.

Saxton will be seen in the film "Twelve," directed by Joel Schu-

macher.

"Twelve"

premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

He just shot a movie called "I Am Ben," co-written and directed by his "Bandslam" co-star, Gaelan Connell, and also featuring Tim Jo and Elvy Yost from "Bandslam." Saxton says that it's "very humbling" to be recognized by fans.

Story continues below.

He said he's looking forward to the Comic-Con in San Diego this week. We asked if he was on a panel. "No, I'm just a nerd. I'm going for all the other panels."

Wendie Malick screens film

Actress Wendie Malick last night introduced a screening of "You Can Have It All," at the Ritz East (125 Sansom). The "Just Shoot Me" star was here in April shooting the romantic comedy, which played QFest twice last weekend. Malick's "Hot in Cleveland" shooting schedule has kept her busy, but she offered to come to town to help the film in any way she could, director Jay Arnold said yesterday.

Arnold co-wrote the screenplay with Thom Cardwell. What screened at QFest was a fine cut. More editing and post-production work will be done before the film is entered in the Sundance Film Festival. Part of Malick's promotion includes a visit to CBS 3 today to tape a future interview for "Talk Philly."

Chio hints at Diego's return

Wired 96.5's Chio repeatedly hinted yesterday on Twitter that his longtime Q102 sidekick Diego Ramos could be coming back to work with him, which we reported in May was a possibility.

Chio referenced the "3 Amigos" getting back together, which is what he, Ramos and producer Joey B. called themselves at Q102.

Joey B. has been at Wired with Chio for several years already.

G-N Kang, the female voice of the show, learned Thursday that she wouldn't be renewed, and now midday host Casey is filling in, but we hear that Ramos could return in a matter of months. Meanwhile, the show is still looking for a new female co-host. Ramos has been busy off-air running Diego's Bar (2767 Bridge), in Bridesburg.

"All I can say is, keep your radio tuned to Wired 96.5," Ramos told us yesterday. Chio did not return our voice mail yesterday afternoon.

Jahri Evans a gracious host

Jahri Evans, the Frankford High football star who won the Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints, treated a group of friends to about $4,500 in food and drinks during a visit to Lucky Strike Lanes & Lounge (1336 Chestnut) a couple of days back.

Nickels signs 'Spore'

Local author Thom Nickels signs his new novel, "Spore," at 6 p.m. Friday at Borders (Broad & Chestnut) and at 5:30 Saturday at A x D Gallery (265 S. 10th). Nickels set the book, about a misunderstood architect on a quest for understanding, around Germantown, East Falls, Roxborough and Center City.

The candy candidate

Every day is Halloween for Ruth Damsker, Democratic candidate for state Senate in the 12th District, who has given out thousands of miniature Baby Ruth bars during campaign stops.
