Extortion try alleged
Federal authorities charged a Kennett Square woman yesterday with scheming from December 2009 to July 1 to extort money from an unidentified victim by threatening to publish a book containing references to the victim's personal life, friends and family that would be embarrassing.
The indictment alleges that Agnes O'Brien, 54, initially demanded a $200,000 payment followed by annual payments of $250,000 for the rest of her life - which were later revised lower - in exchange for agreeing not to publish the harmful material. Authorities also said O'Brien sent the victim harassing e-mails and text messages claiming she had a publisher and film producer interested in her book.

Buckle up in back, too
More New Jerseyans than ever are using front seat belts, but use of seat belts by back-seat passengers has declined, according to a survey by the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The survey showed front seat-belt usage has risen to a record 93.73 percent, an increase of slightly more than 1 percent from last year, state highway safety officials said.
However, only 27.09 percent of adults are buckling up in the back seat, about 5 percent less than in 2009, despite a new state law requiring it.
