Police ID slaying victim

Police identified a man stabbed to death Thursday night after arguing with a friend over money as Bryant Bell, 52, of Wanamaker Street near Race.

The argument occurred inside a house on Wanamaker Street near Girard Avenue shortly after 7 p.m., police said. Bell died at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at 9:42 p.m., police said. Police have a man in custody and expect to file charges.

Probation for food-bank thief

Kim Bacone, a former Philly cop accused of selling items at Cheyney University that she had obtained for free from the Philabundance food bank, has pleaded guilty to theft by deception in Chester County.

Bacone, 48, who most recently worked as a Cheyney police officer, was sentenced this month to two years' probation and 200 hours of community service. Police say she got the food and other items from Philabundance through Community Associates of Strawberry Mansion, a group founded by her late mother in the 1960s. Philabundance has since severed ties with the organization.

More SEPTA name changes

SEPTA announced yesterday that the names of eight stations on the Route 101 and 102 trolleys and the Norristown High Speed Line will change Sept. 5.

On the trolley lines, the Bywood station will become Avon Road; Beverly Hills becomes Beverly Boulevard; Oakview becomes Creek Road; and Collingdale becomes MacDade Boulevard.

On the High Speed Line, West Overbrook becomes Township Line Road; Rosemont becomes Roberts Avenue; Stadium becomes Stadium-Ithan Avenue, and King Manor becomes DeKalb Street.

PSPCA offers low-cost shots

The Pennsylvania SPCA will again offer low-cost vaccines every Wednesday and Saturday starting Aug. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost of distemper and rabies vaccines will be $20 for dogs and cats. The usual price is $35 for cats and $40 for dogs.

Weed decision surprises guv

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said yesterday he was surprised that Rutgers University turned down an opportunity to be the lone grower of the state's medical marijuana crop because it was the school's idea.

"They absolutely came to us. I wouldn't have even thought about it," Christie said, adding that he was disappointed when he heard university leaders say the plan was unworkable. Rutgers spokeswoman Sandra Lanman said the university had no further comment.
