Sports in Brief: Abortion is focus of Pitino extortion testimony

July 31, 2010

Rick Pitino never said a woman who claimed the Louisville basketball coach got her pregnant after a one-night stand had to get an abortion but did advise she "go out of town" for medical care, his aide told a jury Friday in Louisville, Ky.

The aide, Tim Sypher, was testifying against the woman, his ex-wife Karen Cunagin Sypher. He testified at her extortion trial about helping her get an abortion. The two divorced after she was indicted last year on charges of demanding cash and gifts worth millions from Pitino to keep secret their 2003 tryst on a restaurant table.

Tim Sypher, 49, testified that he took the woman to Cincinnati, where she terminated the pregnancy on Aug. 29, 2003. Tim Sypher said he paid for the procedure from $3,000 Pitino gave to Karen Sypher for medical care.

Pitino, married and Roman Catholic, has said he intended for the money to be used for medical insurance, not an abortion.

Karen Sypher, 50, has pleaded not guilty.

West Virginia University said basketball coach Bob Huggins' rib-breaking fall occurred because medication taken on an empty stomach left him lightheaded. Huggins broke seven ribs.

Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips said the NCAA had been on the Tigers' campus this week to talk with two members of the football team. He did not identify the athletes or say what the inquiry was about.

Florida State and the NCAA are paying $325,000 in legal fees to compensate the attorneys of news media companies that sued to force the release of documents in the Seminoles' academic cheating scandal.

The school will pay $65,000 and the NCAA will transfer $260,000 to the attorneys who represented more than 20 outlets.

BOXING: Derek "Pooh" Ennis, who was defending his USBA junior-middleweight title against fellow Philadelphian King Gabriel Rosado, hammered out a majority decision at the Arena.

The 29-year-old Ennis (22-2-1, 13 knockouts) is ranked No. 12 by the IBF. He stayed on track for a shot at major belt with his victory over the 24-year-old Rosado (14-5-1, 8 KOs).

NBA: Lorenzen Wright's ex-wife was threatened at home by three men who were carrying guns and looking for the former NBA player about six weeks before he was shot to death, the woman's attorney said.

Sherra Wright warned her ex-husband, the father of her children, about the visit by men dressed in sport coats with weapons in their waistbands, lawyer Gail Mathes said. But she was frightened and didn't tell authorities about it until Monday,

The body of the 34-year-old was found Wednesday in woods in Memphis.

HORSE RACING: Rachel Alexandra, the reigning Horse of the Year, will make her next start in the Personal Ensign Stakes on Aug. 29 at Saratoga, principal owner Jess Jackson said.
