  • Deborah Hankins, of South Philly, holds a photo of the dog, Jedi, that attacked her and a friend.

When Deborah Hankin's boyfriend left her and his gargantuan Cane Corso Mastiff, she continued to care for him like her own, feeding him every day at 2:30 p.m.

But in return, the beast turned around and mangled her and a friend Saturday afternoon at her home on 24th Street near Washington Avenue, in Point Breeze, police said.

Hankins was able to escape the attack with just abrasions to her left forearm, but her friend, Anita Henderson, 41, wasn't so lucky, a relative said yesterday.

Police say that the dog sank his teeth into Henderson's arms, legs and the back of her neck, injuries so bad she required surgery.

Story continues below.

She was listed in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The 3-year-old dog, named "Jedi," will be quarantined by officials from Animal Care and Control for 10 days pending evaluation, police said. It was not immediately known whether the dog would be put down.

"I don't ever want to see another dog again," said Hankins, 50. "I ain't ever been that scared in my life. By the grace of God, I got my arm out of his mouth."

The traumatizing ordeal happened just after Hankins called the dog in for his regular feeding, she said. After ordering the dog back outside, he suddenly lunged at her, she said.

"When I put my arm up, he just sank his teeth into me, and started dragging me," she said.

She managed to yank her arm out of his mouth and shove a table between them as Jedi tried to attack again, she said.

That's when he turned on Henderson, who sat in a chair several feet away, Hankins said. Hankins and neighbors tried to get the dog off Henderson, who lay balled up on the floor, screaming.

"I kept telling her, play dead, but she kept screaming, so the dog kept biting her," Hankins said.

It wasn't until police arrived that Jedi ceased assaulting Henderson, only to set his sights on his next victim.

"When the cops came in, [the dog] charged at a cop," she said. "He shot him once, and [Jedi] got back up and charged at him again, so he shot him again. Finally he ran out to the back yard and that's where they got him.

"I ain't never seen something like that."
