Minimizing intimidation

Re: Daniel Denvir's commentary Wednesday, "Scouring the city for Black Panther victims":

How ironic and masterful to juxtapose Denvir's opinion piece with an actual photo depicting two New Black Panthers in front of the polling place.

On one hand, the photo presents irrefutable evidence of violations of federal statutes. Two men wearing matching, military-style berets and leather coats complete with emblems denoting their self-professed antiestablishment organization take up positions at the entrance to a polling place. One of the men openly brandishes a weapon.

Story continues below.

On the other hand is Denvir's inane article in which he refers to the situation as merely a brief episode. After conversing with random precinct residents about their awareness of the story line - and finding none - Denvir concludes that no foul occurred and that he, along with all the residents of that precinct, are cool with what transpired on Election Day.

C'mon! When anyone (of any race, creed, color, or persuasion), dressed in obvious militant attire, brandishes a weapon and takes up a position at the entrance to a polling place, I want the full force of our law enforcement and criminal-justice systems to swiftly step in and prosecute the matter to the fullest extent - every time! This issue is that cut and dried.

Rich should pay more in taxes

I don't like either wars or recession, but I also dislike politicians who are so afraid of taxing the rich that our government must resort to borrowing from the rich, paying them interest, and saddling the middle and poorer classes with regressive taxes and the nation with debt.

E.J. Dionne hit it on the head ("Stupid political stands leading nation into a ditch," Sunday) when he called for a "new conservatism worthy of the name" and liberals "willing to speak out on the threat our daft politics poses."

Many of the rich get richer from wars and recession. If, as an IRS study found, 400 households had an adjusted gross income of $139 million, you would think they could pay some of that back. If that's class warfare, bring it on!
