Teachers at charter school agree to contract

Posted: August 05, 2010

Teachers and professional staff at Delaware Valley Charter High School, one of the few unionized charters, have settled on their first contract.

The pact will give them pay raises, tuition benefits, and due process rights. The salary scale was not immediately available.

The Alliance of Charter School Employees Local 6056, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, settled on terms Thursday. The staff voted to unionize in January.

"By giving teachers and staff a voice, we are creating a collaborative environment built on respect that will allow us to retain good teachers and make the school stronger," said Ted Kirsch, president of AFT Pennsylvania.

The new pact still requires the approval of the school's board of directors and the union?s membership.

Delaware Valley, which is on Old York Road in the Fern Rock section of Philadelphia, is the fourth of the city's 74 charter schools to unionize.
