DIY BBQ
Fairmount Park will be the scene for a barbecue celebrating the do-it-yourself spirit this weekend. Make:Philly, a group of area artists and engineers, and Wondergy, a Philadelphia-based science education and entertainment group, will launch water rockets and make "solar s'mores," lighting marshmallows on fire with giant parabolic mirrors, from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday by the Lemon Hill Mansion, Lemon Hill and Sedgeley Drives, in East Fairmount Park. A great escape
In 1945, Clarence Klinedinst and Slick Willie Sutton dug an escape tunnel out of Eastern State Penitentiary. This weekend, actors portraying the two inmates will share their side of the story at the penitentiary's Prison Break Weekend, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2027 Fairmount Ave. The event also features exhibits on some of the nearly 100 escapes from Eastern State and a tour of a replica of the original escape tunnel. Local artists will showcase "en plein air" paintings (French for "in the open air") during In the Good Old Summertime, held at historic Pennypacker Mills this Saturday in Schwenksville. Besides the open juried art exhibition, the event will also feature an antique car show, children's lawn games and races, tours of the Pennypacker Mansion (once the home of Pennsylvania governor Samuel Pennypacker), as well as food and refreshments. A Latin American celebration
To celebrate El Dia del Nino ("Children's Day") in Latin America, Philadelphia Magic Gardens will throw a family-friendly fiesta that features a piƱata, refreshments from El Zarape restaurant, balloon animals and face-painting from Piripitin the Mexican clown, arts and crafts, and dance music from DJ Ross of Love. The event will also feature tours in English and Spanish of Latin American art in the mosaics at the Magic Gardens. The event is free and runs from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Magic Gardens, 1020-1022 South St. The event is sponsored by a grant from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and Peco. Exton's RevolUTIon Car Show is scheduled Saturday at Universal Technical Institute Inc. (UTI), 750 Pennsylvania Dr., Exton. Former Philadelphia Eagles pro-bowler Hugh Douglas is scheduled to sign autographs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The school offers post-secondary education for students seeking careers as professional automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians.
