DeSean, Kolb hook up, finally

  • DeSean Jackson catches a pass during practice Friday, the first time he was able to do so since suffering a lower-back strain last weekend.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Kevin Kolb heaved a pass skyward and the receiver at the other end wasn't Hank Baskett or Riley Cooper or Chad Hall.

It was DeSean Jackson and all felt right in Eagles country.

The team's No. 1 wide receiver returned from a back injury Friday, and while it is still early in training camp, Jackson's presence was good news for an offense that had struggled over the previous few days.

"It feels good," Kolb said. "I'm looking forward to having [Jeremy] Maclin making it back, as well. . . . Being a new group, we need as much work as possible. I'm just glad that their injuries are minor enough that we get everybody back before that first preseason game."

Story continues below.

While the Eagles are calling Maclin's knee injury minor, the second-year starting receiver has yet to practice or even rehab outdoors since he hyperextended his knee Tuesday. Maclin could return before next Friday's preseason opener against the Jaguars, but the Eagles are unlikely to push it.

They are probably content to have dodged major injury, especially considering the dramatic ways in which Jackson and Maclin went down. Both fell to the ground, visibly in pain, after making receptions and both had to be carted from the field at Lehigh.

Word spread quickly that Jackson's lower back strain injury, sustained Saturday, wasn't serious. Maclin's hyperextension seemed to be downgraded when the team deemed it just a "bone bruise," a day later.

Jackson has not spoken with reporters since his arrival at training camp. He declined to answer questions after practice Friday with a shake of the head.

"He looked good," Kolb said. "I think it was a nice little transition for him to get into . . . practice. He looked fluid. Threw some deep balls right off the bat and he went and got them like he always does."

With both starting receivers out, Kolb worked mostly with the second team flankers - Baskett and Cooper - over the last several days. The results have been shaky.

On Wednesday morning, the last real practice of full-contact hitting, Kolb and Cooper hooked up for several catches. But at Thursday's Flight Night they appeared to be on different pages. Hall had some repetitions with the first team, but didn't take advantage of his opportunity and dropped several balls.

"We want those guys out there, but we got to make it work with whoever you got," Kolb said. "Some of the missed throws - no matter who was in - we got to hit him. It starts with us [the quarterbacks] always, and we got to be sharper than what we were."
