A retired Hammonton, N.J., police detective surrendered to authorities and was charged in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that killed a teenager Friday night in Hamilton Township, officials said Sunday.

Investigators charged 63-year-old Anthony Scaltrito and seized the 2009 Dodge Dakota pickup truck he was driving when it allegedly struck and killed 15-year-old Justin Montgomery, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel said Sunday.

The Friday-night accident happened on Route 50 in front of the 4-H fairgrounds in Hamilton Township.

Scaltrito turned himself in Saturday night. He approached Hamilton Township police about the hit-and-run about 8:30 p.m. - nearly a full day after the accident - and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor-vehicle accident and tampering with physical evidence, Housel said.

An autopsy on the teenager was scheduled for Sunday. Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:29 p.m. Friday, 17 minutes after being struck by the southbound pickup, officials said.

Bail for Scaltrito was set Saturday night at $50,000.
