Sports in Brief: Power takes flag in Sonoma

Will Power padded his IndyCar Series lead with a dominating run on Sunday in the Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The Team Penske driver led 73 of 75 laps over the technically demanding, 2.303-mile circuit through the hills of the California wine country.

Power pushed his series lead to 59 points over Dario Franchitti, who finished third behind Scott Dixon.

TRACK & FIELD: Kenya's David Rudisha set a world 800-meter record at the ISTAF World Challenge in Berlin with a time of 1 minute, 41.09 seconds, beating the 13-year-old previous best mark by two hundredths of a second.

South Africa's Caster Semenya chalked up a comfortable victory in the women's 800, posting a time of 1:59.90 in her third race since returning to competition in July after being cleared by the international athletics officials following gender tests.

SWIMMING: Americans Chip Peterson and Christine Jennings won the 10-kilometer open water races at the Pan Pacific championships in Long Beach, Calif.

Peterson won the men's race in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 2 seconds.

Jennings won the women's race in 2:00:33.83. Teammate Eva Fabian was second in 2:00:35.76.

The United States closed out the five-day meet with a leading 51 medals, including 27 gold.

WNBA: Monique Currie scored 20 points, Willingboro's Crystal Langhorne had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Washington Mystics captured the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference with a 90-81 win over the host Atlanta Dream.

Sophia Young completed a three-point play with 0.9 seconds left to give the San Antonio Silver Stars an 83-82 victory over the visiting Phoenix Mercury in a preview of their first-round playoff series.

Cappie Pondexter scored six of her 31 points in overtime, lifting the host New York Liberty to an 88-87 win over the Connecticut Sun for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Newcastle became the third Premier League team - after Chelsea and Arsenal - to record a 6-0 win on the weekend, with striker Andy Carroll scoring a hat trick.

BASKETBALL: Kevin Durant scored 25 points and made two crucial late blocks to help the United States beat Spain, 86-85, in Madrid, in a warm-up game for the basketball world championships.

Juan Carlos Navarro had 20 points for the Spaniards. It was the first loss in nine games for Spain, the defending world champion. The championships begin Saturday in Turkey.

TENNIS: Roger Federer beat Mardy Fish, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4, in Mason, Ohio, to win his second straight Cincinnati Masters title.
