Fantasy football: Scouting the tight ends

August 25, 2010|By ED BARKOWITZ, fantasyfootball@phillynews.com

Brent Celek, Eagles: Will make a run at the Keith Jackson's Eagles' record for catches in a season by a tight end. Jackson had 81 in 1988. Celek had 76 last year.

Dallas Clark, Colts: Coming off one of the greatest seasons ever for a tight end (100 catches, 1,106 yards, 10 touchdowns). As long as Reggie Wayne and the fellas are keeping defenses occupied on the outside, Clark will run free down the middle.

Chris Cooley, Redskins: If you jump on Cooley just because Donovan McNabb is his quarterback, then you haven't done your homework. Fred Davis, a 2008 second-round pick, came in when Cooley got hurt last year and was effective enough to threaten Cooley's numbers this season.

Story continues below.

Alge Crumpler, Patriots: Coaches in New England love his professionalism and how he has no problems accepting whatever role is thrown at him. That sounds like code for "doesn't mind staying in to block." Pass on Crumpler, but keep an eye on rookies Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Jermichael Finley, Packers: Closed the season with four touchdowns in the final five games. Green Bay says he'll also line up in the slot, which is never a bad place for a tight end.

Antonio Gates, Chargers: Turned 30 in June, which would be a problem if he was a running back. But he's not, as evidenced by that 5-year, $36 million contract extension San Diego threw at him in July. Select him with confidence.

Todd Heap, Ravens: Baltimore drafted TEs Ed Dickson (Oregon) and Dennis Pitta (BYU) in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. Heap's just a mediocre option anymore, but Pitta looks like he has a future as a receiver.

Zach Miller, Raiders: Is probably going to lead Oakland in catches and will provide value to those who prefer to take tight ends late.

Visanthe Shiancoe, Vikings: Another guy who should pick up the dinner check whenever he's out with Brett Favre. Might not get you 80 catches, but only Vernon Davis (13) had more touchdowns than "Shank" last year (11) among tight ends.

Jason Witten, Cowboys: The Cowboys have promised to give Witten more opportunities in the red zone. After a 94-catch season last year that included just two touchdowns, they can't give him less.
