  • Eagles guard Stacy Andrews, left in left photo, and linemate Max Jean-Gilles, above, will have to make way for Todd Herremans, who returns to left guard.

Todd Herremans' return to the field should be good news for the Eagles' offensive line, their running game and Kevin Kolb's protection.

It might be bad news, though, for Stacy Andrews.

With Herremans back at his familiar left guard spot, Max Jean-Gilles took Andrews' right guard slot for some first-team practice repetitions Wednesday.

Jean-Gilles, who had been filling in for Herremans, rotated with Andrews in working with the starters during practice. Jean-Gilles said he wants to compete for a starting guard spot, whether it is on the right or left side. Head coach Andy Reid would not go so far as to declare an open competition at Andrews' right guard slot.

"As long as Andrews continues to improve, he'll be that guy, and he's been doing that every day," Reid said.

Jean-Gilles also took some snaps in Herremans' place, though that reflected the plan to limit Herremans in Friday's preseason game. The team is trying to manage the pounding on the left foot Herremans hurt last year.

"Right now my mind is on competing for either one," Jean-Gilles said of the guard jobs.

Said Andrews, "I've just got to keep working and doing what I do, getting better each game."

Andrews and Jean-Gilles were part of an offensive line interior that struggled against the Bengals. Each had low moments of badly missed blocks.

If Nick Cole gets fit to play, he could be another option at right guard, as could Mike McGlynn once center Jamaal Jackson returns. McGlynn and Cole have been filling in for Jackson.

The Eagles plan to start Herremans Friday against the Chiefs, though he might not play as much as the rest of the first team.

Akers, Bell to play Friday

Kicker David Akers, who has sat out the past three practices with a heel injury, will play Friday, Reid said. So will running back Mike Bell, who has missed the first two preseason games, and much of training camp, with hamstring and calf injuries. Cornerback Macho Harris is also expected to play.

Defensive end Juqua Parker, unseated by Brandon Graham atop the depth chart, will sit with an ankle injury.

Parker said he had a "freak accident" at home and wants to be ready for the Sept. 12 season opener. He said he was not bothered by Graham's promotion.

"It don't bother me, it's a business," Parker said. "I understand it's a business decision."
