Low & Outside: AL Notes

  • Former White Sox slugger Frank Thomas wipes away tears as his No. 35 is retired before the game against the Yankees.

Cheers and boos

The Chicago White Sox retired the No. 35 of slugger Frank Thomas on Sunday.

The Big Hurt fought back tears while thanking the organization and the city, saying, "You can only dream of something like this."

Among those on hand to see Thomas become the ninth White Sox player to have his number retired were Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk and former World Series MVP Jermaine Dye.

They got big ovations along with Billy Pierce and Minnie Minoso, mainstays of the White Sox' 1959 pennant winner.

Former manager Terry Bevington got booed. But it was a friendly boo.

Manny to Chicago?

Yahoo Sports reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers will send slugger Manny Ramirez to the White Sox on Monday, most likely by granting Chicago's waiver claim. Ramirez made a pinch-hitting appearance for the Dodgers against Colorado on Sunday and was ejected for arguing balls and strikes on the first pitch.

What a legacy in La La Land.

Best wishes, Bob

Former Indians great Bob Feller, 91, watched Sunday's game from his customary seat in the Cleveland press box. The third-oldest living Hall of Famer had missed five games while having treatment for leukemia.

"I feel better and the doctors say it is treatable," Feller told the Associated Press.

History lesson

The Blue Jays honored righthander Dave Stieb, who threw the only no-hitter in Toronto history 20 years ago this week, beating Cleveland, 3-0, on Sept. 2, 1990. (The losing pitcher in that game was Bud Black, now the San Diego Padres' manager.)

Former Jays Jesse Barfield, Tony Fernandez, Pat Hentgen and Duane Ward joined Stieb on the field for the ceremony.

Fast facts

Oakland is 30-13 in day games, best in the majors. . . . At 16-11, the Baltimore Orioles will enjoy their first winning record in August since 1997.
