Letters: L&I is very responsive to quality-of-life issues

September 01, 2010

Reading the "Cupcake crackdown" editorial (Aug. 30), I was reminded of my younger daughter, who won't just settle for icing with sprinkles, but heaps on gummy bears too. Yet, lost beneath your over-the-toppings were some missing factual ingredients.

We can't ask the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) not to enforce against a vendor just because we like the taste of her product, or because it brings smiles to our faces. In our experience, L&I has been very responsive to quality-of-life problems. It issues warnings before citations, but then does its job in an evenhanded manner: enforcing the law against those who sell legal products without a license, those who sell counterfeit DVDs, those who sell where vending is not allowed, or those who selfishly obstruct the sidewalk.

Story continues below.

I realize it's a slow news week, but I'm not sure this rises to the level of Cup-gate.
