Sports in Brief: Chelios retires after 26 seasons

Chris Chelios, 48, the longest-tenured defenseman in NHL history, is finally hanging up his skates.

After 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cups, Chelios announced his retirement Tuesday and took a job with the Detroit Red Wings.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin has been sentenced to 30 days in jail stemming from his Arizona drunken-driving conviction. He was ordered to report to jail Saturday, but is appealing.

The New York Islanders signed captain Doug Weight to a one-year contract.

The Buffalo Sabres re-signed unrestricted free agent forward Matt Ellis to a one-year contract.

CYCLING: Two-time Tour de France winner Laurent Fignon, 50, died after a long bout with cancer.

Three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador injured his right knee during training.

SOCCER: Phillip Tisson, 28, a member of a St. Lucia soccer team, was shot to death early Monday in New York, police said, only hours after he had scored the winning goal in a semifinal of an international tournament in Brooklyn.

A former goalkeeper for Red Star Belgrade has received death threats after signing with bitter rival Partizan. Red Star fans also have published an obituary on a sports forum website following Vladimir Stojkovic's move.

AC Milan acquired Robinho from Manchester City to bolster a formidable forward line and sold Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to the German club Schalke at European soccer's transfer deadline.

Peter Vermes, the head coach of the Kansas City Wizards who was arrested in early August on suspicion of drunken driving, faces a Nov. 9 court date.

Russia routed Ivory Coast, 72-66, in its third Group C game as Timofey Mozgov scored 19 points.

Lithuania rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit to beat Spain, 76-73, in a Group D game. Linas Kleiza scored four points in the last 35 seconds to clinch the win. Marc Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro led Spain with 18 points each.

COLLEGES: Former graduate assistant Stacey Nasser has joined the Temple women's basketball staff.

The Villanova men's soccer team will play South Florida at PPL Park in Chester on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.

Rutgers basketball guard Tyree Graham, a junior, will undergo surgery on his left knee.

Michigan State guard Korie Lucious was charged with drunken driving. The 20-year-old had a blood-alcohol level of 0.09 percent, according to a police report. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08 percent.

WNBA: The Connecticut Sun's Tina Charles won honors as the rookie of the year, months after she was honored as the women's college player of the year.
