The expansion began after Hurwitz started holding parties in New York City. Soon, parents - mostly moms - were calling from around the country, wanting to stage parties in their towns. Events are put together with a combination of hired staff - usually a host mom - and volunteers.
When I took my son to Baby Loves Disco this past spring, it was a packed house, indeed. On a Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., the Shampoo nightclub parking lot was full.
Inside the club, the dance floor was jammed with toddlers and parents getting their groove on to classic disco tunes from the '70s and '80s. Talk about a "Disco Inferno"!
There was milk and juice at the bar, bowls of fruit, a bubble machine, baskets of colorful scarves, hula hoops, maracas (perfect for little hands), a chill-out area with books and puzzles, and plenty of resources and helpful information for parents from local parenting magazines and organizations.
Besides just being old-fashioned fun, it also was a sneaky way to add in some you-know-what. Exercise! It was a great place for networking, too.
One thing's for sure, my son thoroughly enjoyed himself. He giggled and was amazed at the stream of bubbles coming from the ceiling. He started busting moves as soon as he hit the dance floor, whirling, twirling, hoping, skipping and spinning.
We went on the dawn of his second birthday, and he was simply delighted to get his jam on with his peers.
Want to get in on the next party?
Mark your calendar for Sept. 12, the day Baby Loves Disco will hold its fall kickoff event here and start a 45-city national tour that will also benefit the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, which raises money to fight childhood cancer.
