A 19-year-old woman was charged with DUI and aggravated assault after her 20-year-old boyfriend was run over by a car early yesterday while he was trying to push it up the Manayunk Wall, police said.

Mary Opel, of Ridge Avenue near Heritage Drive, in East Falls, was steering the disabled 1996 Volvo sedan east on Levering Street about 4:15 a.m. while her boyfriend tried to push it up the steep hill, police said.

The car rolled back over him and dragged him 25 to 35 feet, police said. He was in extremely critical condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

It was unknown whether the man, who had just moved into a home with three friends on Levering Street near Cresson, in Manayunk, was also intoxicated.

Yesterday, neighbors, many of whom were asleep at the time of the accident, talked about waking up and seeing the crushed car just a few feet away from their front door.

"It was an accident, it shouldn't have happened, but they made some bad choices," said a neighbor, who asked that her name not be used.

Others said that the man, who was not identified, and his roommates hosted a party last night in their new home.

"There are too many party houses on this street, in this part of town," said a neighbor, who asked to not be identified.

Matt Gore, another neighbor who saw the crumpled car yesterday morning before he went to work, said he was walking his dog Wednesday night and talking with some of the party-goers.

"They just said they had class in the morning," Gore said.

The Manayunk Wall, a half-mile hill reputed to be the steepest vertical drop in the city, is famously part of the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, a one-day, 156-mile annual race.
