A 20-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was run over by a car he was trying to push up the steep street known as the Manayunk Wall early Thursday, police said.

Mary Opel, 19, was behind the wheel of the disabled 1996 Volvo sedan but did not stop the car from rolling, police said.

She was charged with aggravated assault, driving under the influence, and related offenses.

The man, whose name was not released, was trying to push the car in the 200 block of Levering Street about 4:15 a.m. when it started rolling backward.

The street has a steep grade at that spot, police said.

The Volvo dragged the man 25 to 30 feet before hitting a parked car and coming to a halt, police said.

Medics pulled the man from under the car and took him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was reported in extremely critical condition with head and torso injuries.

Levering Street and adjoining Lyceum Street are known as the Manayunk Wall because of the challenge it poses to bicyclists who must climb it 10 times as part of the annual Philadelphia International Cycling Championship.
