  • Becker has been a starter since she was freshman, Trojans coach Lucy Gil notes. Also a standout soccer player, the midfielder was forced to choose between that sport and field hockey when the PIAA decided last year to hold only a fall championship for girls' soccer.
  • Radnor midfielder Helene Caniglia (right) battles Council Rock North's Elly Plappert last season. Caniglia was a key reason that the Red Raiders made the PIAA Class AAA playoffs for the first time since 1997.

Wissahickon junior Lauren Becker has been known to work occasionally on her field hockey game in the house. Her mother can attest to that.

"There are no holes in the wall - but the moulding has a few dents in it," Lisa Becker said with a chuckle.

The younger Becker, a center midfielder for the Trojans, explained the dents by saying she likes to play with the family's golden retriever, Maddie. The dog enjoys chasing the balls that Becker hits.

Becker has had the challenging task of following in the field hockey footsteps of two outstanding Wissahickon graduates, Katie O'Donnell and Adele Lever. Becker thinks anything she can to do to improve her skills - inside or outside the house - is good.

One of the most talented players to come out of this area, O'Donnell is a member of the U.S. Women's National team and a senior at Maryland. Lever started all 22 games for Michigan State (18-4) last season as a freshman.

Becker said she doesn't feel any added pressure because of her predecessors. Told she was being compared very favorably with O'Donnell and Lever, Becker was flattered.

"They are both amazing players," Becker said. "I am honored to be listed in the same class. As for any pressure, I would say no. You simply go out there and do your best."

Last season, Becker's best helped key a big turnaround for the Trojans, who have won five of the last seven Suburban One League American Conference championships. They finished 20-2 and made it to the District 1 Class AAA semifinals before losing to Owen J. Roberts.

They lost to Hempfield in the first round of the PIAA playoffs. The season before, Wissahickon suffered through an uncharacteristic 8-13 record.

"Lauren's an elite hockey player," Trojans coach Lucy Gil said. "She reminds me a lot of [O'Donnell]. She's been a starter since she was a freshman, and I see her coming into her own now. She handles the ball extremely well, and I expect her to have an awesome year."

The Trojans will need it, as their nonleague schedule includes Villa Maria Academy, Central Bucks South, and Pennsbury. Villa and South are perennially strong teams, and Pennsbury is coming off one of its best years.

"That's good, because that will help us better prepare for the playoffs," said Becker, whose Mystx club team has won national indoor championships in three of the last four years.
