Paul VI's bevy of speedy wide receivers and talented running backs is typical of teams that run the spread formation. The Eagles have big-play receivers in Chris Hutton and Jakwail Bailey and explosive backs in James Kenner and Johnell Anderson.

"We have a lot of speed and we like to showcase it," Hutton said.

Gloucester Catholic junior wide receiver Elliott McCummings is getting recruiting letters from the likes of UCLA. Washington Township has an accomplished senior wide receiver in Kordell McInnis, while flex tight end Ryan Wills, a standout linebacker, could be poised for a big season on offense.

Pennsville returns most of Emmons' favorite receivers, including running back Tim Haslett and wide outs Matt Drummond and Colton Newsome.

Winslow Township wide receiver DeVonte Waugh is being recruited by Louisville, among other programs. The Eagles have other big-play receivers such as Stacy Upshaw-Goree and Bill Johnson, a talented transfer from Lindenwold.

"We want to get our athletic guys into space," McBride said. "We'll let them go from there."

For years, veteran coach Tom Maderia was one of the few proponents of the spread offense in South Jersey. Maderia's teams at Holy Cross and now at Burlington Township have featured no-huddle attacks with three and four wide receivers as well as running backs who can catch the football.

But the offense is gaining popularity. Camden Catholic, Audubon and Lindenwold are among the teams that have run the offense at times in recent years. Kingsway, a run-oriented team for most of its 31 seasons under veteran coach Tony Barchuk, plans to operate out of the spread this season to take advantage of senior quarterback Rondell Gilmore and a group of talented receivers.

Saturday's opener with Washington Township visiting Winslow Township could be among the most exciting games of the season. Same goes for that Nov. 6 date between Pennsville and Gloucester Catholic.

"Win or lose, it won't be the same old boring football," Wood said.
