Youngstown State outlook: Not very sunny, at least Saturday. The Penguins of the Football Championship Subdivision have 33 new players on their roster. They also have a number of new starters, beginning with redshirt freshman Kurt Hess at quarterback. Their most prominent holdover is wide receiver Dominique Barnes, who caught 60 passes last season and has a 23-game streak of at least one reception. Youngstown State is 19-23-1 against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents, including a 37-3 loss to Penn State in 2006.

Penn State outlook: The Nittany Lions also begin the season with a new quarterback, Robert Bolden, the first true freshman to start an opener in Paterno's long career. You figure Paterno will keep things simple offensively to help Bolden and to keep top-ranked Alabama, the Nittany Lions' next opponent, from learning too much. Backup quarterbacks Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome are expected to play as well. Look for quick passes and an emphasis on Evan Royster and the running game behind a reshuffled offensive line. The defense features new starters at linebacker, defensive tackle and one cornerback spot, but a lot of people should play.
