Sports in Brief: Kovalchuk deal gets NHL's OK

The NHL reportedly signed off on Ilya Kovalchuk's latest contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Five weeks after rejecting the Russian's landmark 17-year, $102 million contract with the Devils, the league approved a revised 15-year, $100 million deal on Friday after reaching an agreement with the NHL Players Association on an amendment covering long-term contracts. Kovalchuk's agent Jay Grossman confirmed the agreement in an e-mail to the Associated Press.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Mike Comrie to a $500,000, one-year contract.

INTERNATIONAL: Two groups of scientists have developed tests for gene doping in what the World Anti-Doping Agency hailed as a major breakthrough. Scientists in Germany said they have come up with a blood test that can provide "conclusive proof" of gene doping, even going back as far as 56 days from when the doping took place.

SOCCER: France lost, 1-0, to Belarus to open qualifying for the 2012 European Championship. Sergei Kislyak scored in the 86th minute.

David Villa matched Spain's all-time scoring record with his 44th international goal to help the defending European champion beat Liechtenstein, 4-0, and take an early lead in Group I. The Netherlands beat San Marino, 5-0, to win its first competitive match since losing the World Cup final to Spain in July, while Germany won, 1-0, at Belgium and England beat Bulgaria, 4-0.

COLLEGES: Duke reported that senior Kyle Singler, last season's most outstanding player at the Final Four, had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

The NCAA put Missouri-St. Louis on probation for two years, citing wagering violations within the men's golf program.

Kazembe Abif, a standout at Lawrenceville Prep (N.J.) made an oral commitment to play basketball at Drexel beginning in the 2011-12 season. The 6-foot-7 swingman played for University High School in Elizabeth, N.J.

AUTO RACING: Will Power, the IndyCar Series points leader, qualified second for Saturday's Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

Todd Bodine overcame a midrace spin to win the NASCAR Trucks Series race at Kentucky, ending star Kyle Busch's three-series winning streak at four.

Bodine, the series points leader, nearly wrecked trying to pass Busch just past the race's halfway point.
