Ellen Gray: Season's greetings: The best and the worst of the upcoming TV shows

September 07, 2010

NBC's "Outlaw" (10 p.m. Fridays, Channel 10). Love Jimmy Smits, too, but hate what they're doing to him in this even more far-fetched drama about a handsome, conservative and relatively young U.S. Supreme Court justice who quits the court and starts taking on seemingly hopeless cases - starting with one in Philadelphia, where the pilot was filmed. (The rest of the series will be filmed on the West Coast.) Those who believe that "The West Wing" was a wish-fulfillment fantasy perpetrated by Hollywood liberals are free to conjecture that someone (maybe even Conan O'Brien, who's an executive producer) hopes that Chief Justice John Roberts might be inspired by Smits' example. Premieres: 10 p.m. Sept. 15, moving to regular time slot Sept. 17).

Too soon to know

Not available for screening at press time:

NBC's "Law & Order: Los Angeles" (10 p.m. Wednesdays). A West Coast-based version of the "L&O" franchise, whose mother ship it's replacing. What we know: Stars include Skeet Ulrich, Alfred Molina and Lafayette Hill's Terrence Howard, who'll alternate with Molina as one of the show's lead prosecutors. Premieres: Sept. 29.

NBC's "School Pride" (8 p.m. Fridays). A sort of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" for public schools, it focuses on renovating. What we know: Cheryl Hines ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") is the executive producer. Premieres: Sept. 24. *
