HOCKEY: The Atlanta Thrashers signed free-agent forward Fredrik Modin, giving the team another veteran with experience in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 35-year-old Modin had 11 points in 44 games with Columbus and the Los Angeles Kings last season. He signed a one-year contract.
AUTO RACING: Tony Stewart raced to his first NASCAR Sprint Cup victory of the year, pulling away from Carl Edwards off the final restart Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., to win the Emory Healthcare 500. Stewart beat Edwards by 1.316 seconds for his first win since Oct. 4, 2009, at Kansas. Jimmie Johnson was third, followed by Jeff Burton and Kyle Busch.
HORSE RACING: Thiskyhasnolimit captured the $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx in Bensalem, going the 1-mile, 70-yard route in 1 minute, 40.49 seconds and paying $18.40, $9.40 and $4.80. Nacho Friend was second ($5.40, $4.20), followed by Pleasant Prince ($3).
TENNIS: Patrick McEnroe resigned as U.S. Davis Cup captain after 10 years. He will leave after the Americans' playoff against Colombia this month.
McEnroe led the United States to a Davis Cup title in 2007. But for the first time since 2005, the Americans must win in the playoffs to secure a spot in the top tier of the Davis Cup. Four-time major champion Jim Courier, a commentator for CBS, said during the network's coverage Monday that he would be interested in the job.
OLYMPICS: The leader of Munich's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics resigned for health reasons, leaving figure skating great Katarina Witt with a more prominent role in the campaign. Willy Bogner announced last week that he had an unspecified bowel disease. On Monday, he said he was stepping down after doctors recommended he avoid long-distance travel.
Bernard Schwank was appointed the new CEO. Witt, the two-time Olympic champion, is the bid chairwoman who has primarily been active promoting Munich events abroad. She will now will take on a wider role in that regard. Juergen Buehl will serve as bid director.
