Pfefferle told investigators that she was angry and took a knife from a kitchen counter to "scare" Hus. When Hus turned to face her, "he turned into the knife," Pfefferle told police. An autopsy revealed that Hus was stabbed once in the chest, in a thrusting, downward motion. The knife punctured Hus' aorta, authorities said.
Pfefferle, a former cheerleader and a sophomore at La Salle University, worked at a water-ice stand. Hus, according to her MySpace page, was a big part of Pfefferle's life. Kaigh said that she had never been arrested or in trouble before and had an anxiety disorder.
Hus, an Audubon resident, was a carpenter and former football player at Audubon High School.
A superior court judge lowered Pfefferle's bail to $500,000 yesterday when she was arraigned on murder charges. Neither Pfefferle's or Hus' family could be reached for comment, but a source familiar with the case said that the families came together after the hearing and embraced one another.
Authorities said that there was no apparent evidence that Pfefferle had been assaulted before the stabbing, and a longtime friend of Hus' said that Pfefferle was confrontational in the relationship.
"Matt was a really big dude," said Mike Borman. "He never hit her or anything like that. They were always arguing, but he would have never done anything to her."
Borman said he believed that Pfefferle and Hus had been at separate parties before the argument. He said that Pfefferle attempted to jump in the ambulance with Hus but police stopped her.
