An 11-year-old Delaware girl died Wednesday afternoon when the all-terrain vehicle she was driving flipped on top of her.

The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. in Marydel, west of Dover.

Cassandra R. Jones was riding in her grandfather's yard when the ATV's front tires struck the edge of an asphalt driveway. The ATV hopped, then flipped backward as the spinning rear wheels came down and caused the 2003 Honda Recon to suddenly accelerate.

Cassandra, who was not wearing a helmet, hit her head on the driveway and became pinned under the ATV. After being found by her grandfather, she was taken to Kent General Hospital in Dover, where she was pronounced dead at 5:06 p.m.

Story continues below.

Cassandra was in the sixth grade at Fifer Middle School in Camden, Kent County.
