Thieves branching out in Delco

Perhaps, good wood is hard to find in Delaware County - but it's not hard to sell.

State Police said that two guys - ages 15 and 21 - stole more than a half-dozen trees that they cut down and put up for sale on Craigslist. The trees sold as firewood for about $400.

Between seven and 15 oak trees were stolen Wednesday from a wooded property along Valleybrook Road in Chester Heights that belongs to an elderly couple, police said.

Authorities did not say how the trees were cut down, how they were traced to Craigslist or if the suspects knew the victims.

The couple declined to prosecute on theft charges, so the names of the suspects were withheld by police.

"I'm not surprised at what they steal anymore," said one state trooper. "It's almost like they'll steal anything."

Anyone else who suspects trees may have been illegally cut down from their property is urged to call the State Police Media barracks at 484-840-1000.
