Two people were shot at Broad and Jefferson on a recent Friday night, two blocks from where Temple University claims its campus begins. I waited an entire week for information from Temple about this shooting and, as always, I got nothing. I once wrote a letter to the editor about a shooting that occurred at 16th and Susquehanna, two blocks from a Temple residence hall, White Hall. (That letter was never published, so I am trying again because I have an important message.)
Temple students and their parents need to take the initiative to seek out safety information because unless a shooting occurs directly on campus, they will never hear about it. I understand why Temple doesn't discuss how dangerous its surroundings are during campus tours or orientation, but once students are enrolled, these dangers become a fact of life. It's a lie of omission to hide these incidents.
