Phillies-Giants: How the closers match up

Posted: October 15, 2010

Giants: Brian Wilson, RHP

Age: 28.

2010 overall: Tied Rod Beck's 1993 Giants record with 48 saves . . . Had five blown saves in the regular season and another in Game 2 of the NLDS when he was asked to pitch two innings . . . Frequently asked to pitch more than one inning . . . Lefties hit .206 off him during the regular season compared with .231 for righties.

Vs. Phillies: Went 1-for-2 in save chances this year . . . Was victimized by a two-run double by Jayson Werth, in San Francisco, on April 28, in a game the Phillies went on to win in 11 innings . . . Got a one-batter save when he induced Raul Ibanez to fly out, Aug. 19, at Citizens Bank Park . . . Also blew a save against the Phils when Pat Burrell, now his Giants teammate, hit a two-out walk-off home run on May 2, 2008.

Did you know?: Became the Giants closer in 2008 . . . Had Tommy John surgery during his junior year at LSU . . . Was voted "class clown" in high school and his off-field personality is somewhat of a cross between comedians Bill Murray and Jim Carrey.

Phillies: Brad Lidge, RHP

Age: 33.

2010 overall: Rebounded from a slow start and converted 22 of his final 24 save opportunities . . . Pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save in Game 2 of the NLDS, his only appearance in the series . . . Hasn't had an appearance of more than one inning since the 2008 NLCS and his inefficiency at holding runners on makes it difficult to bring him in with men on base . . . Lefties hit .214 off him during the regular season, compared with .173 for righties.

Vs. Giants: Has not faced San Francisco much in his career and did not appear in any games this year. Was on the disabled list during the teams' first series in April . . . Has pitched in just five games against the Giants since joining the Phillies in 2008 registering a win, two saves and no blown saves.

Did you know?: His 17 career postseason saves are second only to Mariano Rivera (41) all time . . . Is 11-for-11 in postseason save opportunities as a Phillie . . . Though he grew up in the Denver suburb of Englewood, Colo., Lidge was born in Sacramento, California's capital.
