Pa. Girls: Neal leads Delco Christian to Dist. 1 Class A soccer title

Delco Christian used two Carley Neal goals to beat Bicentennial League rival Phil-Mont Christian, 3-0, and win the PIAA District 1 Class A soccer championship Wednesday.

Playing on the turf field at Truman, Neal scored the first two goals of the game, one from 17 yards out on the right side from an angle and the other on a one-time volley directly in front of the net for the game's final goal late in the second half.

Emily Evans and Rachel Bernard also scored to help the Knights earn their second district title in the last three years.

PIAA District 1 Class AA. In the championship game, also at Truman, Villa Maria got a second-half goal from Kasey Schiavoni to beat second-seeded Villa Joseph Marie, 1-0, and earn the school's first-ever district title in soccer.

The top-seeded Hurricanes (18-1) watched as Schiavoni ran down the side of the field, took a couple of touches and blasted a hard shot by the goalie, her 22d goal of the season.

The two teams split 1-0 decisions during the regular season.

District 1 Class AAA. In a semifinal doubleheader at Souderton, Council Rock South needed a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks to outlast Central Bucks West after two scoreless overtimes, and Pennridge beat West Chester East, 1-0.

Friends Schools. Senior captain Brie Blumenthal took only five minutes to score the winning goal for host Shipley in a 2-0 league championship win over George School.

Blumenthal's goal came five minutes into the game on a blast from 25 yards out that was assisted by Sophie Katz.

Nanci Selig, a sophomore forward, added an insurance goal midway through the half, her 19th of the season.

Tri-County. Junior striker Tamara Moskowitz scored a pair of goals to lead Barrack Hebrew to a 3-0 league championship win over visiting Perkiomen School. Moskowitz stole the opening tap and scored 24 seconds into the game.

Inter-Ac. Sophomore midfielder Anna Ludwick scored both first-half goals to get Agnes Irwin off to a good start in a 4-0 win at Baldwin. Mary Beth Smith and Christina Karalis added second-half goals for the Owls (4-5-1). Autumn Wedderburn had 10 saves in goal for the shutout. Tessa Logan had 12 saves in goal for the Bears.

Field Hockey

At North Penn, junior midfielder Brooke Sabia scored a pair of goals, the first off a corner inserted by her identical twin sister Allie, to give Mount St. Joseph a 2-0 PIAA District 1 Class AAA semifinal win over Central Bucks East.

The fourth-seeded Magic (16-3-1) advance to play second-seeded Wissahickon in the title game on Saturday.

Wissahickon earned its title shot with a 1-0 win over Council Rock North in a game played at Central Bucks West. Junior midfielder Gretchen Guaglionone scored the game's only goal 21 minutes, 49 seconds into the second half on a shot that dribbled past two defenders.

Junior Rina Lobell posted the shutout with four saves for the Trojans (19-2).

In a consolation-round game at Plymouth Whitemarsh, Becky Bronstein scored nine minutes, 59 seconds into overtime to give Haverford High a 2-1 win over Owen J. Roberts and a slot in the states. Kelsey LeBlanc, who scored a first-half goal for the seventh-seeded Fords. Rachel Schwab scored for the Wildcats.

In a consolation game at Wissahickon, Central Bucks South outlasted North Penn, 4-3.

Inter-Ac. Kit Howley scored one minute into overtime to give Agnes Irwin a 3-2 win at Baldwin.
