Two forwards out for Temple

Posted: November 05, 2010

Temple will begin the basketball season without two of the tallest Owls.

Six-foot-9 senior forward Craig Williams is expected to be sidelined for a month as he recovers from surgery on his right foot. Temple also has decided to redshirt 6-10 freshman forward Jimmy McDonnell this season.

The Owls had hoped Williams would provide depth early in the season.

The native of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, averaged 3.8 points and 1.8 rebounds per game last season. He broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his foot over the summer and had surgery during the first week of September.

"So he's just rounding into shape now," Temple coach Fran Dunphy said. "I think the reality is it's going to probably be Christmastime before he is an effective player for us."

Rail-thin at 180 pounds, McDonnell averaged 13.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4 blocks last season at Jackson (N.J.) Memorial High.

Dunphy said McDonnell was not disappointed about sitting out this season.

"I think that's what he wanted as well," the coach said.
