Letters: Ill-informed editorial on planned Duck tours

Posted: November 12, 2010

The editorial on the city's proposed amphibious tour ramp on the Schuylkill correctly highlighted many of the advantages of allowing the Ducks on the Schuylkill, but your discussion of the drawbacks was ill-informed ("Quacky idea for boats," Sunday).

The claim that "the boats could not be allowed back on the Delaware" is simply inaccurate. The U.S. Coast Guard long ago cleared our vessels to resume operations on the Delaware. We share the Coast Guard's confidence that our tour can be operated safely. Our plan to reopen in 2011 on the Schuylkill is based on the many positive attributes of the Schuylkill route, not on concerns about the Delaware.

Your assessment of the "impracticality" of driving the Ducks from Center City to the Schuylkill for a "10 minute cruise" is off-base, as our proposed water tour on the Schuylkill would be roughly twice that - 20 minutes, or about one-third of the total tour time. Many in Philadelphia have strongly encouraged a Schuylkill tour, excited about the prospect of our guests' viewing the city's "crown jewels" along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and in the historic district, as well as the Fairmount Water Works.

Since 2003 we have carried more than one million area residents and. yes, tourists. True, it is not for everyone - but the Ducks and the employees who make them go are a part of the rich fabric of the city. We will continue to work cooperatively and in good faith with all stakeholders - including the city, Fairmount Park, Schuylkill River Development Corp., the Coast Guard, and various community associations - to continue creating a great Philadelphia tour experience.
